Description

The coach house and stable block, located to the east of Number 1 on West Fen Road, dates from the mid-19th century. It is constructed of gault brick and features a slate roof. The building is two storeys high and has an elliptical inner and outer archway for the carriage entrance, which is fitted with double boarded doors shaped to match the arch. The street elevation includes pitching doors and windows.

Inside the courtyard, the coach house and stable are positioned to the left of the carriageway, while the right side contains a coach house and two stables, along with first-floor accommodation for the coachman. The original coach house doors have been replaced with 20th-century sliding doors. The stable doors are original and have rectangular fanlights with glazing bars set in cambered gauged brick arches. The stable windows also feature similar arches and glazing bars, with the lower halves having wooden shuttered ventilation.

The first-floor windows have metal casements that replace the original windows, although some still retain internal folded shutters. There are two boarded pitching doors, each with two glass panels. The stables were used to serve Number 42 St Mary's Street and the building is included for its group value only.
