Description
St Mary's Lodge is a late 18th century or early 19th century house made of yellow gault brick, located on St Mary's Street. It is similar in design to the adjacent houses at Nos 40 and 42. The building has three storeys and cellars, featuring a parapet and a stone string course. It has a three-window range with double-hung sash windows that include glazing bars and are set in plain reveals. The central entrance consists of a four-panel door approached by steps, topped with a semi-circular fanlight that has fan glazing. This door is set in recessed brick reveals and flanked by quadrant fluted columns. The roof is covered with slate.
In the 20th century, the space between Nos 42 and 44 was built up in a style that closely matches the original design. St Mary's Lodge is part of a group of listed buildings that includes Nos 20, 22, 22A, 24 to 30 (even), 34, 36, 36A, 38, and Nos 40 to 60 (even), as well as Nos 13 to 29 (odd) and 29A, Parson's Almshouses, and Nos 1 to 5 (odd) on Downham Road. This group also connects with No 20 Church Lane and the Parish Church of St Mary.
