Description

Oliver Cromwell's House, located at 29 St Mary's Street, is a significant building mainly from the 16th century, featuring a timber-framed and plastered structure with exposed timber framing on the front block. At the rear, there is a brick and stone wing that extends southward. The house contains traces of earlier work, including stone arches dating back to around 1380. It has two storeys, with a five-window range on the north front and a one-window range on the east end. The windows are three-light mullioned and transomed, fitted with 20th-century casements and leaded lights. The ground storey was extended in the 18th century, and the windows here are also 20th-century with leaded lights. The doorway features an 18th-century doorcase with moulded architraves and a flat hood supported by shaped brackets. A plaque on the front notes that this was "Cromwell House, the residence of Oliver Cromwell from 1636-1647 when collector of Ely Tithes." The roof is tiled and includes a tall 17th-century brick chimney stack at the rear. Inside, there is 16th-century panelling and a stone winder staircase with a central newel from around 1450, which is now covered in wood. Additionally, there is a 16th-century fireplace and remnants of a gallery that includes an original 15th-century window.

The house is part of a group with several other buildings, including Nos 13 to 29 (odd) and 29A, Parson's Almshouses, as well as Nos 20, 22, 22A, Nos 24 to 30 (even), Nos 34, 36, 36A, 38, and Nos 40 to 60 (even), forming a cohesive historical context with the Parish Church of St Mary and other nearby properties.
