Description
The Parish Church of St Mary is a stone rubble church with ashlar dressing, primarily dating from the 13th century, with some later additions. Construction began in the early part of the 13th century under Bishop Eustace, who served from 1198 to 1215. The church features a wide nave with seven bays in a Transitional style, supported by slender plain piers and capitals adorned with scalloped ornamentation. The clerestory dates from the 15th century.
A notable feature is the fine north doorway, which is early 13th century and showcases orders, columns with shaft rings, stiff-leaf capitals, and a pointed arch decorated with chevron ornamentation, likely crafted by artisans from the Cathedral workshop. The chancel includes lancet windows on the south side, with the exception of the first window from the west end, and perpendicular windows on the north side. The west tower and stone spire were constructed in the 14th century, featuring angle buttresses with three offsets and corner pinnacles. The spire is distinguished by tall arched dormer windows at the base and smaller dormer windows near the top.
The Parish Church of St Mary is part of a group that includes Nos 13 to 19 (odd), Nos 20 to 30 (consecutive), Parson's Almshouses, Nos 34, 36, 36A, 38, and Nos 40 to 60 (even), as well as St. Mary's Street and No. 20 Church Lane.
