Description
Nos 40 and 42 St Mary's Street are a pair of houses built in the late 18th century or early 19th century, constructed from yellow gault brick. They feature a parapet and a stone string course, standing three storeys tall with cellars. The houses have a five-window range, with double-hung sash windows that include glazing bars and are set in plain reveals. The second-storey windows are adorned with ornamental iron window guards. The doorways, which are accessed by steps, have four-panel doors topped with semi-circular fanlights that feature fan glazing. These doorways are set within recessed brick reveals and are flanked by fluted quadrant columns. The roofs are covered with slate.
These houses are part of a group that includes Nos 20, 22, 22A, 24 to 30 (even), 34, 36, 36A, 38, and 60 on St Mary's Street, as well as Nos 13 to 29 (odd) and 29A, Parson's Almshouses, and Nos 1 to 5 (odd) Downham Road. They also form a group with No 20 Church Lane and the Parish Church of St Mary.
