Description

Numbers 1, 1A, 2 and 3 and attached railings form a terrace of four houses built around 1840. The houses are constructed of gault brick, painted white, with slate roofs, and feature ridge stacks marking the divisions between the properties. Number 1 (Fern House) is two windows wide, with a four-panelled door and a 6/6 sash window to the left. The first floor has two similar sash windows, all beneath gauged skewback arches. Brick pilaster strips define the boundaries of the property on either side. Number 1A (Prospect House) is three windows wide, with a central four-panelled door and a 6/6 sash window either side. The first floor has three sash windows, and the basement has two 3/3 sash windows, each with a gauged skewback arch. Pilaster strips frame the east window bay. Number 2 has a canopy hood over its four-panelled door, a 6/6 sash window to the right (east) and matching first-floor sashes, along with a 3/3 basement sash, all with gauged skewback arches. Number 3 features a six-panelled door, the upper two panels glazed, a 6/6 sash window to the right and matching first-floor sashes, and a 3/3 basement sash, again with gauged skewback arches. The interior of Number 3 includes a stick baluster staircase, a hob grate in the rear ground-floor room, and an arched register grate dating to around 1880 in the front ground-floor rooms. The remaining interiors were not inspected. The area railings to Numbers 1 and 1A have circular section verticals, alternating between looped and spear-headed finials, with plain top and bottom rails. Railings to Number 2 have square section verticals with obelisk finials. The steps to Numbers 1A and 2 have lattice verticals.
