Description
Numbers 33-48 and attached railings are a terrace of houses built between 1849 by Amon Henry Wilds. They form the eastern two-storey range of Park Crescent, mirroring the western two-storey range at numbers 1-16. The houses are constructed of stucco, with slate roofs.
The standard design includes an entrance bay slightly set back from the adjoining house. Each house features a flat-arched entrance with a moulded architrave, moulded cornice, overlight, and an original panelled door. Quoins mark the division between the entrance bay and the rest of the facade. All windows are flat-arched with moulded architraves; the central window on the first floor is generally blank. The windows are mostly original sash designs, with 4/4 glazing on the ground floor and 2/2 on the first floor. Console brackets support a frieze of wreaths, set beneath deep eaves, and stacks are typically located on party walls. A three-storey “tower” is visible above the roof, featuring console brackets, a wreathed frieze, and a pedimented gable. Cast-iron area railings are fitted with spearhead finials.
Variations exist among the individual houses: numbers 33 and 37 have central first-floor windows that are not blocked. Numbers 33, 37, 40, 42, 43, and 46-48 have flat-arched dormers. Number 34 lacks console brackets. Numbers 39-41 have sashes with margin lights to the ground floor. Number 42 has a small window inserted where the original central first-floor window was located. Number 46 has the upper panel of its door glazed. The entrance bay of number 48 is positioned on the return, and this final house has two windows facing Park Crescent, followed by a chamfered corner with two blank windows, then two narrow windows. A projecting hipped entrance bay follows, featuring a flat-arched doorcase with side and overlights between antae, a flat-arched window above, and quoins to the sides. The bracketed eaves continue around the corner, leading to a three-storey tower that matches that of number 1 Park Crescent.
The interior of the houses has not been inspected.
