Description

No. 44 Cowgate is a building from the early to mid 19th century, with later 19th-century decoration. It is constructed of painted brick and features a slate roof. The building has three storeys, with stone rusticated quoins and a doorway that includes a six-panel door topped by an ornamental glazed semi-circular fanlight. There are remains of a 19th-century shop front, although it has a modern stall riser. Each storey has one window. Notably, there is a canted oriel window on a panelled base adorned with four female masks, which supports a smaller three-light canted oriel on the second floor, also with a panelled base and four carved consoles featuring female masks. Nos. 42 to 50 (even) form a group with this building.
