Description
This building, originally an 18th-century rubble barn, was significantly altered in the early 19th century and subsequently modernized. It is located to the rear of number 40 Cowgate in Peterborough. The roof is of steep stone slate with stone verges and a modern brick chimney. The building has stone quoins on the first floor and brick on the ground floor. The rear elevation has two first-floor windows with wooden lintels, 19th-century sash windows with glazing bars. A long lintel spans the ground floor opening, now containing a small window. Modern windows are set within the gable ends. The front elevation is rebuilt in painted brick, dating from the early 19th century, featuring four first-floor windows, two with round arches and two with pointed arches. Three ground-floor windows have arched heads with a Gothic style of glazing. Three modern doors are set within round-arched doorways, and a flat-arched carriage entry is used for ambulances. A modern extension is present on the left, built against an old wall. Internally, the remains of an original beamed ceiling are visible.
