Description
The churchyard boundary wall of the Church of St Mary and St Botolph (Thorney Abbey) dates from around 1860 and is constructed of local gault brick, forming a large irregular enclosure. The wall on the south side is plain, while the sections facing Church Street, Abbey Place, the rear of Cheriton House, and partly Thorney Park feature a plinth with a weathered brick offset cap and weathered brick coping. Additionally, there is a horizontal band of cross-shaped recesses in the upper part of the wall. At the corner of Church Street and Abbey, the wall has a splayed junction where a large 18th-century tombstone is affixed. This tombstone has two inscription panels framed in moulded arches, with carvings above that include cherub heads. Above the tombstone, there is another panel of carved stone set in a merlon. The churchyard wall is listed for its group value with the Church of St Mary and St Botolph (Thorney Abbey).
