Description

Nos. 8 and 9, Abbey Place, date from the mid-19th century, and were likely designed by S.S. Teulon as part of the Bedford Estate development. These buildings, constructed around 1860-1870, were originally a post office with an adjoining cottage. They are built of coursed limestone with ashlar dressings, and have a Collyweston stone roof with saddlestones and tall stone chimneys. No. 8 has a prominent, ornate triple-gabled composition. It features semi-dormers, with a larger gable containing a Royal Coat of Arms in a stepped dripmould, and a canted bay window with a stone roof to the ground floor. No. 9 has a break in the gable with a corbelled external chimney stack to the right and a gabled semi-dormer. The windows are mullioned lancets, with two and three lights. No. 8 has a gabled porch, while No. 9 has a four-centred arch to a pent roof porch and a four-centred arch porch with a drip mould to the right. Decorative stepped drip mould panels feature, along with smaller panels bearing the Bedford initials and coronet. The buildings form a picturesque composition.
