Description
The wall enclosing the churchyard of the Church of St Mary is a boundary wall featuring piers, buttresses, and gateways. It may have medieval origins, with later additions or modifications. Constructed from thin-bedded slate-stone, it has a steep saddle-back coping made of small stones set on edge.
On the south side, which borders the A379, there is a square pier with a stepped and weathered pyramidal capping at the western end. Opposite the church porch, there is a pair of 19th-century iron gates with an overthrow, accessed by two plus three steps. The wall rises approximately 2.25 meters from the path and has a square offset plinth, along with a series of flat weathered buttresses that create panels of 4, 9, and 7.
The return walls on the east, west, and north sides are generally simpler and lower due to the rise in ground levels. The north wall features a pair of cast iron gates set between square piers, similar to those opposite the porch. This wall is an important historical feature related to the church and holds visual significance along the main street of the village.
