Description
Lower Hatch Farmhouse is a farmhouse that was formerly an outbuilding. It mainly dates from the 19th or 20th century but incorporates some fabric from the 16th or 17th century. The building is constructed of rubble with a slate roof. It is a small rectangular block with a low return wing to the right. The front features two plain 20th-century windows at the eaves and a smaller window slightly lower, all located to the left of a 20th-century glazed door.
On the left gable return, there is a blocked loft door above a continuous moulded string or plinth course. Below this, there is a blocked opening with voussoirs, which is presumed to have led to an undercroft or stone area. To the left, a curved boundary wall connects to the end gable wall of Hatch Arundell and contains an arched opening with a chamfer, set to curve, which was formerly a door but is now blocked. A similar opening is found in the right end of the return block. A lofty rubble wall extends back from this opening, forming one side of a narrow lane or throughway that is flanked by the farm courtyard.
