Description

Fleur Cottage and Furneaux Thatch is a house that has been converted into three cottages and later reverted to two cottages. It likely dates from the 17th century or early 18th century, with possible earlier origins, and was extended in the late 18th century or early 19th century. The building is constructed of painted and rough-hewn stone rubble, topped with a thatched roof featuring half-hipped ends. The stone rubble stacks are rendered and heightened with red brick at the gable ends and the rear.

The layout consists of a pair of cottages, with Fleur Cottage on the left and Furneaux Thatch on the right. It was probably originally a two or three-room plan house, with the right-hand room heated by a lateral stack at the back and the left-hand room having a stack on the left end wall. If it was originally a three-room plan, the center room may have been unheated or its stack has since been removed. In the 18th century, it was extended by a one-room addition at the right-hand end and converted into three cottages. In the 20th century, it was converted into two houses, with outshuts added at the back, one of which is earlier and located to the right of center.

The exterior features two storeys and an almost symmetrical five-window south front with small window openings fitted with 20th-century casements. There are three 20th-century purlins with thatched canopies on the left, right, and right of center. The rear elevation includes a large lateral stack to the left of center, 20th-century first-floor casements, and single-storey outducts with corrugated iron and asbestos tile roofs.

The interior of Furneaux Thatch was partially inspected, revealing later softwood ceiling joints, no main beam, and an unchamfered timber lintel over the fireplace in the right-hand room. The left-hand room's fireplace was not seen, and the first floor and roof structure were not inspected. Fleur Cottage was not inspected at all inside.
