Description

This is an 18th-century or earlier shippon and attached barn or linhay. The building is constructed of rubble and cob, with corrugated iron roofs. The shippon section has a steep, hipped roof supported by six wide, roughly stone piers. A flight of seven concrete steps leads to a loading plank door in the return wall. The rear wall is constructed of cob. The upper level of the shippon has five open bays with rough wood beams to the floor. It features an A-frame roof with cambered collars and a series of close-set purlins or thatching spars. A gabled alteration to the return arm incorporates corrugated iron doors and corrugated sheathing to a timber-framed wall on the west side. This appears to be the oldest building within the significant farm group at Higher Hatch Farm.
