Description

CHURCHSTOW VILLAGE CENTRE SX 74 NW 5/81 Butterwell opposite Home Farm - II Butterwell. Probably C19, possibly earlier. Slate-stone, granite trough. Deep niche set back in boundary wall, c.2 m high, c.1.5 m wide at front and c.1.25 m deep, on stone floor and with flat stone slab roof under organic growth. In back a C19 plank door on strap hinge (one missing: October 1988) giving access to square trough, filled with running water, and an inlet from spring source at back; a lead overflow pipe runs down externally. Set in wall, overall width to responds c.2.5 metres. A more complete version than is usual.
