Description
Butterwell, located opposite Home Farm in Churchstow, is likely from the 19th century, though it may be older. It features a slate-stone and granite trough set within a deep niche in the boundary wall. The niche is approximately 2 meters high, 1.5 meters wide at the front, and 1.25 meters deep, with a stone floor and a flat stone slab roof covered in organic growth. At the back, there is a 19th-century plank door on strap hinges, although one hinge is missing as of October 1988. This door provides access to a square trough that is filled with running water, sourced from a spring at the back. An external lead overflow pipe runs down from the trough. The overall width of the structure is about 2.5 meters, making it a more complete version than is typically found.
