Description
Burghley Lodges (west gate) and gateway arches, gates, and flanking walls were built in 1801 by Legg of Stamford in the Elizabethan style of Burghley House. Constructed from ashlar, the structure features a triple arched gateway flanked by lodges. The central arched carriageway includes niches and three-quarter Tuscan columns that support an entablature adorned with obelisks, balls, and the Cecil arms at the center. Family crests are displayed in the balustrade above the pedestrian archways on either side. The flanking lodges are three stories tall, with square ground and first floors, and an octagonal second floor topped with ogee-shaped stone cupola roofs from which chimneys emerge. The low flanking walls are finished with cornices and balls, and the gates are made of decorative ironwork.
