Description
Stonhill is a house built in 1902 by E. Turner Powell for Miss M.A. Bassett. It features whitewashed roughcast walls and a roof made of plain tiles with gabled, hipped, and half-hipped sections. The building showcases a Vernacular Revival style, highlighted by leaded casements in wooden frames.
The house has two storeys and a prominent projecting gable with tile hanging. This gable has a pentice roof over a six-light window located above a projecting square bay that includes a mullion and transom window, also with a pentice roof. To the right, there is a part-glazed door. The service wing, situated further to the right, contains various casements, some with shutters, and two four-light dormers above. The entrance is located at the far left, within an open corner supported by wooden arches, and features a panel of pargetting above. The left end has additional casements.
At the rear, the facade mirrors the front with a similar projecting gable that has a four-light window above two two-light casements with shutters. There is a dormer on a catslide roof to the right, and the service wing, set back to the left, has a prominent lateral stack and a four-light casement above a later porch on its end.
Inside, the house remains little altered and includes a dining room and drawing room, both featuring wide inglenook fireplaces. The design reflects a thoughtful and picturesque approach, catering to a patron who had a lifelong interest in running handicraft classes for disabled people.
