Description
Nos. 46 and 48 on High Street are a pair of mid-19th century houses that have been combined into a single property, featuring shops on the ground floor. The buildings are constructed of red brick and topped with a slate roof. They have a double-pile plan and a two-bay front elevation, rising three storeys high.
The first and second floors are adorned with sash windows that have glazing bars and flat heads. In the centre of the ground floor, there are two doorways; the right-hand doorway is now blocked and features a 20th-century casement, while the left-hand doorway has a 20th-century glazed door. Both doorways are framed by a single surround that includes three pilasters with Ionic capitals and a moulded flat hood supported by shallow scroll brackets.
Flanking the doorways are two shop windows; the left-hand window is a 19th-century design with pilasters and a cornice on cut brackets, while the right-hand window is a later, simpler design set slightly higher. The property also features two red brick multiple ridge stacks. This building is noted for its unusual doorway and its group value within the streetscape.
