Description

The Parish Church of St Michael and All Angels is located on High Street in Shefford. It has origins dating back to the 15th century and was significantly rebuilt in 1822, with a south aisle added in 1850 and the arcade rebuilt in the early 20th century. The church is constructed from coursed ironstone with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs, designed in a style reminiscent of the 13th century.

The building consists of a nave, a south aisle, and a west tower. The nave and south aisle are similar in style, although the south aisle is simpler, lacking buttresses and dripstones. Both sections have pointed arched windows with Y tracery. The eastern ends of both the nave and the south aisle, as well as the west end of the aisle, are adorned with three-light pointed arched windows featuring intersecting tracery. The arcade, made of colourwashed brick, also showcases pointed arches. The south aisle includes a pointed arched door with a square label.

The west tower, originally from the 15th century but modified in the 19th century, has three stages and is supported by three-stage buttresses. It features a three-light west window with 19th-century intersecting tracery and a north door similar to the one on the south aisle. The top stage of the tower has two-light quatrefoiled windows and a 20th-century brick parapet.

Inside, the church is plain, with some late 19th-century and early 20th-century stained glass, and the roofs were crafted by Mallows and Grocock in 1907.
