Description
Shefford Methodist Church is a Methodist church built in 1912 on the site of a Wesleyan chapel. It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features slate roofs with terracotta ridge cresting. The building is rectangular and oriented north to south, with shallow transepts at the south end. Designed in the Art Nouveau Gothic style, it remains remarkably unaltered.
The north gable, facing the road, has a semi-octagonal porch at the center, flanked by two decorative buttresses. There are small battered towers at each corner. The gable and porch are adorned with stone banding and coping. Most windows have pointed-arched heads, with each light featuring a cinquefoiled ogee arch. The central window is large and consists of three lights, while the flanking windows are long single lights. The corner towers have lancet windows, and the porch contains small single lights. The segmental-arched doorway features a five-light fanlight above part-glazed double doors that are painted to imitate oak and retain their original strap hinges. The apex of the gable showcases decorative stone tracery, and there is wrought ironwork decoration on the roofs of the corner towers.
The other elevations have similar two and three-light windows. The interior appears unaltered and includes decorative features such as moulded ceiling timbers, ogee-headed panelling at the south end, fine Art Nouveau stained glass, and a variety of brass fittings.
