Description

No. 8, Brook End is a house, originally the Chequers public house, dating from the 18th century. It is constructed with roughcast render over a timber frame, although the gable ends have been rebuilt or encased in brick and the whole building has been colourwashed. The roof is a gambrel form and is covered with 20th-century tiles. The house has two storeys and attics, with a three-window facade. The ground floor has 19th-century tripartite sash windows. The first floor has three-light casement windows, flanked by a two-light casement. The attic has three box dormers, each containing a three-light casement. A central doorway has a part-glazed door topped by a rectangular fanlight, set within a simple surround with a pediment hood supported by brackets. There is a dentil cornice to the eaves. Brick stacks are integrated into both gable ends.
