Description
The Post Office, located at No. 21 and No. 2 in Potton Market Square, is a Grade II listed building. Originally a house, it has been divided into two dwellings with shops on the ground floor. The building features an 18th-century facade that refronts an earlier structure, likely from the 17th century. It is constructed of dark red brick with lighter red brick dressings, while the left-hand gable end is rendered. No. 2 has a clay tile roof, and No. 21 has 20th-century tiles.
The building has a seven-window facade, spanning two storeys and attics. The first floor showcases seven sash windows that are almost flush with the wall, set under gauged brick flat arches. The ground floor includes two similar windows and 19th-century shop fronts in the outer bays. Both shop fronts are two bays wide, featuring pilastered surrounds, moulded consoles, and cornices. The attic is adorned with three gabled dormers that contain casement windows.
No. 21 boasts a Doric pedimented doorcase with fluted pilasters and a triglyph frieze, which frames a panelled door topped by a rectangular fanlight. The eaves are highlighted by a moulded brick dentil cornice, and there is a rebuilt red brick ridge stack.
