Description
The Parish Church of Saint Mary is a Grade I listed building made of coursed limestone rubble with clay tile roofs. It has a layout that includes a 2-bay chancel, a 3-bay nave, north and south aisles, a west tower, and a south porch. There are remnants of Anglo-Saxon work in the north wall of the chancel and at the base of the tower. Originally, the nave did not have aisles, but the south aisle was added in the early 14th century, featuring octagonal piers in the arcade. The north aisle was constructed slightly later and has quatrefoil piers. In the 15th century, a clerestorey was added above the arcades, which includes three windows on each side, each with two trefoiled lights under a square head. The Anglo-Saxon chancel was extended eastwards in the 14th century, and there was a 14th-century south chapel that has since been demolished. The tower has three stages, with the top stage dating from the 15th century, featuring an embattled parapet and gargoyles at each corner. The church also contains a 15th-century chancel screen, and most of the pews and the pulpit are from the Jacobean period.
