Description
This barn, located approximately 160 metres west-southwest of Colesden Grange Farmhouse, is likely from the 14th century, with a midstrey added in the 17th century and a further extension from the 17th or 18th century. It features a weatherboarded timber frame and a corrugated sheet steel roof with jowled ends. The barn has five bays with aisles on both the east and west sides. The midstrey was added to the east side in the 17th century, specifically to the second bay from the north end, while a two-bay extension was constructed at the north end in the 17th or 18th century. The east side showcases a large gabled midstrey positioned to the right of the centre, featuring plank double doors, with the extension set back on the right. On the west side, there is a cart entrance to the left of centre that breaks the eaves with a raking roof, and the extension is set back on the left.
Inside, the roof above the tie-beams has been replaced, but the rest of the structure remains largely intact. It includes a large jowled arcade and aisle posts, with passing braces from the aisle posts to the tie beams that are halved and lapped to the posts, as well as tie-beam and aisle ties. There are straight braces from the aisle posts that are mortice and tenoned to the arcade plates and aisle ties. The wall studding lacks mid rails and features straight tension braces. The purlins and corner rafters have been replaced, while the midstrey has a clasped purlin. The north extension has jowled wall posts, but its roof has also been replaced.
