Description

This is a barn located about 850 metres east-north-east of New Hall, dating from the 15th century with alterations made in the 18th century. The barn features weatherboarding over a timber frame set on a brick plinth. Its roof is hipped to the west and gabled to the east, covered in corrugated asbestos. The structure consists of four bays and includes an 18th-century gabled midstrey and a lean-to outshot on the south side.

There is clear evidence that the barn was originally double-aisled, featuring aisle ties and downbracing, with braces rising from the joweled storey posts to the arcade plate. The east and west end walls still display much of the original framing, with downbraces halved and trenched into the studs. The barn underwent modifications in the 18th century, likely in two stages, which included the addition of the midstrey on the south side and the complete removal of the north aisle. The side walls were infilled with intermediate storey posts, girts, and pegged close studding in three bays, along with the creation of an opening with a pair of double doors opposite the midstrey. The midstrey features a series of chiselled carpenter marks.

At a later date, the remainder of the south aisle was removed, and the side wall was infilled with primary braced and close studding framing with minimal pegging. During this period, the rising braces from the storey posts to the tie beams were replaced with knee joints, and the roof was reconstructed to include side purlins and many wide-sectioned coupled rafters from a crown post roof.
