Description
The Wine Barrel is a late 16th century timber-framed house that features a late 14th century cross-wing on the southwest side. The exterior is finished with pebble dash and has a steep plain tile roof with gabled ends. The building stands two storeys high and has a three-window range with three gables. The left-hand gable is the end of the 14th century cross-wing, which was originally jettied but has been underbuilt in 2019 and has a half-hipped roof at the rear. The timber frame is largely intact and includes a complete crown post roof. The other two gables are part of a late 16th century rebuild, incorporating some re-used timbers from the earlier open hall.
There is a large brick chimney stack that is off-centre in the 16th century part of the house, featuring two brick fireplaces with four-centred arches and another fireplace with a timber bresumer. Most of the windows are modern casements, and there is a modern shop extension that projects from the right side of the front.
