Description

Number 1 and 2, including the former Number 79 Welch Gate, are part of a house, likely dating from the late 15th century, which was substantially refronted in the late 18th century, with later 20th-century alterations. The building is timber-framed and now clad in brick, with a tile roof. It comprises three bays of an original four-bay timber-framed structure, the fourth bay forming Number 80 Welch Gate. The building has one storey and an attic, the attic being lit by four gabled dormers. On the ground floor, there are two polygonal oriels. A former central entrance has been blocked with a 4-centred brick arch, which is flanked by two entrances. The entrance to the left has a segmental head and a 20th-century ledged and boarded door; the entrance to the right has a half-glazed 20th-century door. The timber framing is visible internally. The roof trusses have struts to the collar, clasped purlins, and curved wind-braces; curved tension braces are present on the ground floor of the trusses.
