Description

4 Mitton Street is a house that underwent remodelling in the late 18th century or early 19th century, originally built as a timber-framed structure and altered in the 20th century. The exterior features painted brick with sandstone block foundations and a clay plain tile roof that has gabled ends and corbelled brick eaves. There are brick stacks at the gable end and lateral sides.

The house has a three-bay front range, with the right-hand bay likely added during the remodelling. It includes a wing at the rear left and an outbuilding at the rear right, both now part of the house. The building is two storeys tall with a cellar. The south front is asymmetrical with three windows, featuring 20th-century windows in the original large openings. The ground floor windows have cambered arches, while the first floor has early 19th-century wrought-iron bowed balconies. The doorway, located to the left of centre, has a panelled door with a semi-circular fanlight that has radiating glazing bars, and it is sheltered by an early 19th-century wrought-iron porch with a tent-shaped canopy. There is a late 20th-century doorway on the right.

Inside, there is a straight staircase rising from the front doorway. The interior features late 18th-century or early 19th-century panelled doors, a fireplace with a panelled chimneypiece and an ornate cast-iron grate, and exposed earlier timber-frame elements. The cellar walls are made of sandstone block.
