Description

The Stourport on Severn war memorials consist of a First World War memorial, designed by The Bromsgrove Guild and erected in 1922, along with a Second World War memorial that features a sundial added in 1954.

The First World War memorial is made of Portland stone and red brick. It is approximately 1.8 meters high and 2.9 meters wide, featuring a series of stone tablets set into recessed panels within a red brick wall. The upper tablet is inscribed with the words "TO THE GLORIOUS DEAD," while a shallower tablet below it reads "1914 – 1918." The main section of the wall displays the roll of honour, listing the names of 113 local men who lost their lives, incised into stone tablets arranged in five columns. Above this, there is a relief-carved urn surrounded by a wreath and ribbons. The memorial is accessed by three shallow, paved steps.

The Second World War memorial is located a short distance southeast of the First World War memorial and is integrated into a unifying paved feature. It consists of a plain, square-section plinth with a moulded cap and foot, set on two octagonal steps. The gnomon of the sundial on top is missing. The inscriptions on the plinth are in black lettering, stating "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF/ THOSE OF/ STOURPORT ON SEVERN/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ DURING WORLD WAR/ 1939 - 1945." The names of 34 men who died in that conflict are inscribed on the sides of the plinth, along with an additional inscription that reads "1982/ FALKLANDS CAMPAIGN," which includes the name of a serviceman who was killed during that campaign.
