Description
Springbrook Forge, located northwest of Springbrook House in Blakedown, is a water-driven scythe forge dating from around 1840. The building is constructed of red brick and features a Welsh slate roof. It is a single-storey structure with a gable end facing the entrance, which has a basket-arched design and double plank doors. The gable wall is otherwise blank. On either side of the building, there are various casement windows set under brick cambered arches.
On the left side of the forge, there is an 18-foot overshot cast iron waterwheel, which has a pipe and pentrough above it. This waterwheel is connected via gearing and a shaft to belt-drive wheels located inside the building. The interior also contains a brick fireplace and a roof supported by a 3-bay tie-beam truss. Springbrook Forge was already in operation by 1827.
