Description

CHURCHILL & BLAKEDOWN Springbrook Forge SO 87 NE NW of Springbrook House, Blakedown 7/162 - II Water-driven scythe forge, c1840. Red brick and Welsh slate roof. Single storey, gable facing. Basket-arched entrance with double plank doors, otherwise gable wall is blank. To either side of building are various casements under brick cambered arches. To left side an 18 foot overshot cast iron waterwheel with pipe and pentrough above connected via gearing and shaft to belt-drive wheels within. Also inside a brick fireplace and 3-bay tie-beam truss roof. Springbrook Forge was in existence by 1827.
