Description
The Church of St James the Great is a parish church built in 1868 by W J Hopkins. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar and features a tiled roof. The church consists of a nave, a chancel, and a tower located at the north-east corner.
The tower has three stages and is topped with a parapet that is pierced by quatrefoils. The belfry includes a window with two cinquefoiled lights set under a 2-centred head, which has chamfered reveals. The first stage of the tower has slit windows, and the north door features a 2-centred head with a label.
The nave is divided into four bays, supported by angle buttresses. From left to right, the bays contain a trefoil lancet, a south porch designed in a 14th-century style with timber framing, and the last two bays each have a window with two cinquefoiled lights under a 2-centred head. The chancel has two windows, each with two cinquefoiled lights under 2-centred heads, and the east window features three cinquefoiled lights under a 2-centred head with a label.
Inside, it is reported that there are recessed seats with canopies on either side of the chancel arch.
