Description
The Churchill War Memorial is a First World War memorial, erected in 1920, with later additions for the Second World War. It is made of red Hollington sandstone and is located at the southwest corner of the crossroads of the Blakedown to Broome and Cookley to Hagley roads, northeast of the village of Churchill.
The memorial features an octagonal tapering shaft that rises above a square base, topped with a Latin cross that has a carved ‘IHS’ central shield. The cross is set on a square plinth with chamfered lower corners, which rests on a platform with a moulded base.
On the principal face (east) of the plinth, there is an inscription in memory of those from the parish who lost their lives in the First World War: "THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 - 1919/ R.I.P.," followed by seven names. The north face bears the inscription "ROLL OF HONOUR," listing 38 other parishioners (including two women) who served and returned, with names also inscribed on the north, west, and south faces. The names of two men who lost their lives in the Second World War were added later, inscribed under "THE WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945" on the platform.
