Description
The Church of St James the Great is a parish church located on Birmingham Road in Blakedown. It was built in 1866 by the architect G E Street and was extended in 1905. The church is constructed of sandstone rubble and features a machine tile roof. The nave, chancel, and north aisle were added in 1905.
The nave consists of three bays, with a window to the left featuring two cinquefoiled lights and a trefoiled lancet. To the right, there is a gabled porch. The west window has three cinquefoiled lights set under a 2-centred head, topped by a timber bellcote with a shingled pyramidal roof. The chancel includes one trefoiled lancet and an east window with three cinquefoiled lights. The aisle has two windows with two pointed lights, and at the left end, there is a window with two cinquefoiled lights under a square head.
Inside, the church features a three-bay arcade leading to the aisle, which has two Tudor arches and a smaller 2-centred arch to the west. The bellcote is supported by a large arch-braced collar truss. Most of the fittings date from the early 20th century.
