Description
The former forge and workshop at Brook House, located 10 metres west of the house, dates from the late 18th century. This building features four bays and is constructed of clay lump, with a rendered exterior and a gabled pantiled roof facing east. The structure has a brick and flint base that extends to the south, where other buildings have been demolished. The southern end wall is modern and timber-framed, covered with weatherboarding. The southern bay was formerly used as a forge, which has exposed clay lump walls that are blackened from use. In the second bay from the south, there are large boarded double doors that lead into a spacious wheelwright's shop, which includes a large glazed and ventilated screen on the east side. A rear window in the second bay may indicate where former rear doors were located. The roof structure was reconstructed in the 19th century. This building is of social and technological interest and is particularly notable for its clay lump construction, which is also found in Brook House, of which it serves as an outhouse.
