Description
The public pump, located on the riverbank opposite Chapel Lane in Little Hadham, was built in 1880. It stands 2 metres high and is made of decorated cast iron, painted white. On the north side of the chamber, raised lettering reads "ERECTED BY SUBSCRIPTION APRIL 1880". The pump features a wide cylindrical barrel with two raised rings and a large spurred spout at the upper ring. There is a moulded corbelled expansion to the chamber with a straight moulded spout. The top flange is also moulded and carries a tall foliate cap topped with a pineapple finial. A dog-leg wrought iron handle, pivoted on the south face of the chamber, tapers to a large pear-shaped counterweight knob. The surrounding area is paved with blue stable chequer-paviours and includes white posts with chains between them. This pump is a notable example of a subscription pump, recognized for its artistic, social, and technological significance, and is part of a group located in the middle of the Conservation Area.
