Description

The Maltings is a house from the 17th century, likely a remodel of an earlier structure. It features a single-storey, flat-roofed brick extension at the rear, built in a modern style around 1965 by G Mathers. The main part of the house is one and a half storeys, constructed from timber framing and plaster, facing east. The roof is made of old red tiles, half-hipped to the north and gabled to the south, with a tile-hung gable on the south side. There is a small, modern red brick gabled porch and two gabled dormers on the front wall plate. A central chimney is located one third from the south end of the house.

The layout follows a lobby entry plan, with a service room to the north that was formerly axially divided. There is a brick oven to the west of the stack, opening from the middle room. The floors to the north of the chimney have irregular joists running longitudinally, which were inserted over the service room, while the south room features a stop-chamfered axial beam with slightly square joists. The north end of this room is supported off the fireplace lintel, likely inserted during the 17th century.

The house is said to have flint walls that support the sill plates, with external plastering applied over weatherboarding around 1965. The roof was thatched until 1927. There are small paned modern bow windows on the south and west sides, and an old ovolo-moulded battened entrance door has been reused in the porch. The modern rear brick extension includes large sliding windows facing south and has a deep overhang on its flat roof.
