Description

A house, part of which was formerly an inn, now functions as two shops and offices. It dates to the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and incorporates earlier fabric, likely from the 17th century, with later alterations. The brick facade is rendered with lined stucco, and the roof is covered with plain tiles, featuring three gabled dormers. The building is two storeys high, with a three-window front and three parallel rear wings arranged at right angles, the wing on the right extending furthest and belonging to number 51. The first floor has nine-pane segmental-headed windows, each with a central casement and some further top-hung casements. The right-hand shopfront is 20th century, featuring a central part-glazed door and flanking plate-glazed canted-bay windows, all under a pitched tile roof. The left-hand shopfront has a leaded modillion cornice and fascia. It includes a plate-glass shop window with a canted corner, three moulded mullions, and a moulded sill. A 20th-century shop door is located to the right, leading to a through-passage, where a four-panel door can also be found. The rear of the main wing features a stack and part-dentilled eaves, with an old tile roof. There are also two further gabled wings with old tile roofs. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, the right-hand portion of the building was the former Ship Inn, and the first floor of the left-hand part housed a former Masons’ lodge.
