Description

St Gilbert's School, Waresley House is a small country house that has been converted into a school. It dates from the late 18th century and has undergone early and late 20th century alterations. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings and features a low pitched hipped stone slate roof. The main facade faces south and consists of three storeys with a modillioned cornice at the blocking course and sill strings on the ground and first floors.

The facade has seven bays, with a prominent central three-bay pedimented section that projects forward and includes a glazed oculus in the tympanum. The windows are primarily glazing bar sash windows, although many have been replaced by late 20th century top hung casements. These windows feature stone voussoirs and keystones, with a central Venetian window on the first floor and a Diocletian window above it on the second floor, where the windows are smaller in size.

There is a segmental-plan Doric portico with four columns and a Doric frieze, which is accessed by steps and includes a glazed door with an overlight and flanking windows. The building has a U-plan layout at the rear. Inside, the entrance hall was mostly reconstructed around 1912 and features Ionic columns at the main doors.
