Description
The Gables is a late 17th-century school, later converted into a house, with alterations from the late 18th century and the 20th century. The building is constructed of brick on a sandstone plinth and has a tile roof with gable end stacks. It has two storeys over a cellar, with an attic lit by four flat-roofed dormers. The brickwork features coped verges and a dentilled cornice. The front elevation has six windows: five timber cross windows and a four-pane sash window, the last of which is a late 18th-century addition. An entrance is located in the fourth bay from the left, featuring a pedimented doorcase with pilasters and a triglyph frieze. Inside, a well-staircase is found in a gabled projection to the rear, characterised by splat balusters. The entrance hall contains moulded ceiling beams, potentially dating back to the 16th century. However, no other features in the building predate the late 17th century.
