Description
Morcott Hall School is a large house that has been converted into a school. It was mostly built around 1820, although it may include some earlier elements; the kitchen wing at the back resembles an 18th-century cottage. The building is constructed of coursed rubble, with the main front faced in ashlar. It stands three storeys high and has ten bays. The outer gables are shallow and topped with high parapets.
On the left side, the gable projects slightly, and from it extends a two-storey squared bay window, which features Ionic pilasters that are lightly moulded with incised rectangles. This bay window contains four windows on each floor. All the windows have moulded architraves and are tall with minimal glazing bars. The central section consists of four bays. The doorway is topped with a round-arched fanlight and is set beneath a broken pediment, featuring a slightly moulded architrave. The right gable is flush with the facade and is two bays wide.
There are two string courses and a modillion eaves cornice that is interrupted by the gables. The rear of the building is made of rubble, both squared and randomly coursed, and has a stone-tiled roof with a long wing that runs parallel to the street at a right angle to the main range. The irregular design suggests that various parts of the building may have been constructed at different times. The low kitchen wing, which is one and a half storeys high and has gabled dormers and stone stacks, appears to be the oldest part of the structure.
