Description

The Church of St Michael is a parish church located in Upton Warren. It was originally built in the late 13th century and underwent remodeling in the late 14th century. The chancel was rebuilt in 1724, and the nave was constructed in 1798. The church is made of sandstone ashlar and has a tile roof.

The tower consists of three stages, featuring an upper stage that is offset, diagonal buttresses, a crenellated parapet, and a recessed octagonal stone spire with gargoyle water spouts. The ground stage has Decorated windows on the east and west sides, each with two cinquefoil-headed lights. The first stage is mostly blank, except for a small 2-centred head window on the south side. The belfry has windows with two trefoil-headed lights under a centred head, dating back to the late 13th century.

The nave, built in 1798, has a plain parapet and a moulded cornice. It consists of three bays, with windows featuring 2-centred heads, labels, and Y-tracery. The west wall is blank, and there is an entrance in the south wall at the west end, which has a centred moulded head. The chancel, rebuilt in 1724, incorporates earlier walls of uncertain date and has a plain parapet, a moulded cornice, and blind side walls. The east window has a 2-centred head without tracery.

Inside, the chancel arch is a plain 2-centred arch, while the tower arch consists of two moulded orders that continue down the jambs with a 2-centred head. There is a gallery at the west end supported by two cast iron columns. Notable fittings include a late 18th-century wooden Gothick pulpit and stained glass in the east window signed by "Taylor late O'Connor/ 4 Berners St London 1880."
