Description

The Church of St Mary, located on Church Lane in Wychbold, is a parish church built between 1888 and 1889 by Lewis Shepherd of Worcester. It features a design in the Decorated style, constructed from random rubble with ashlar dressings and a machine tile roof. The church comprises a nave, chancel, north vestry, and north and south transepts, with a tower positioned at the angle between the chancel and the south transept.

The tower has four stages, with stepped angle buttresses and a crenellated parapet adorned with pinnacles at the corners. The ground stage includes a door on the south wall with a moulded two-centred head, supported by engaged shafts. The second stage has two trefoiled lights beneath a two-centred head, while the third stage features two louvred lancets, each topped with a trefoil head. Both the south and north transepts have three trefoiled lights under two-centred heads with labels.

The nave consists of four bays, with three windows in the south wall, each containing two trefoiled lights under two-centred heads, and a door in the west bay that has a timber porch and a two-centred head. The west window showcases five trefoiled lights beneath a two-centred head with a label, and there are four additional windows in the north wall. The chancel has a string course and stepped angle buttresses, with two bays; the western bay is occupied by the vestry to the north and the tower to the south, featuring a two-trefoiled light window on the south side and an east window with three trefoiled lights under a two-centred head.

Inside, the church has brick walls with ashlar dressings and two-centred arches leading to the chancel and transepts. The chancel includes a two-seat sedilia. The ecclesiastical parish of Wychbold was established from Dodderhill in 1888.
