Description
Astwood Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th century, with alterations made around 1800 and in the 20th century. It features a timber-frame construction, with the front faced in brick and lath and plaster infill, topped by a tiled roof. The building has an H-plan layout, with the hall aligned east to west and ashlar lateral stacks located at the cross-wings and the rear (north) of the hall. Each stack has three star-plan brick shafts and early 19th-century caps.
The south front is made of brick and consists of two storeys and an attic, which is lit by a series of 1:2:1 windows. These include three-light 19th-century casements under segmental heads, with gablets above the two in the hall range. All windows have recessed panels both above and below them. The ground floor features 1:1:1 windows similar to those above, with a door to the left end of the hall range that is accompanied by a late 20th-century glazed porch.
The framing is visible on all other elevations, showcasing close-studding with a mid-rail on each floor and straight tension braces. The gable of the east cross-wing is close-studded with two collars, and the tie-beam jetties out with decorative brackets to the wall-plate. The gable of the west cross-wing is filled with herringbone framing. At the rear entrance, located at the east end of the hall, there is a studded door dating from around 1600.
