Description
Astwood Manor Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with some parts rebuilt in the late 18th century and later repairs. It features a timber frame with painted brick infill and some areas of painted brick. The building has an H-plan layout, with the hall range oriented north-west to south-east. The south-east cross-wing was rebuilt in the late 18th century. There is a large lateral stone stack on the south-west wall of the hall and another stack on the north-west wall of the north-west cross-wing, both of which have three star-plan brick shafts and were rebuilt in the mid-20th century.
The south-west front has two storeys and attics in the cross-wings, with irregular fenestration consisting of a 1:2:1 window arrangement. To the left, there is a 3-light 20th-century casement window and a tall transomed 2-light stair window. A 3-light casement window is located under a segmental head. The entrance is roughly central, accessed through a mid-20th-century gabled porch, with a door flanked by fixed casements.
In terms of framing, the north-west cross-wing has two rectangular panels high on the ground floor and three high with tension braces on the first floor. The hall features four rectangular panels high, with some decorative framing visible on the north-east (garden) front of the north-west cross-wing. Inside, there is a single-flight stair with a landing balustrade made of late 17th-century splat balusters. Additionally, there are remains of a moat to the west of the farmhouse.
