Description
Staggs Meadow Cottage and The Shielding are two houses dating from the late 16th century, with alterations made in the mid-20th century and late 20th century. The buildings feature a timber-frame structure, with some wattle-and-daub and brick infill, and are mostly clad in brick. They consist of three framed bays aligned north to south, with the northern bay being slightly lower. There is a porch located at the north-east corner of the central bay, and a cross-wing to the south that has been mostly rebuilt in the late 20th century following a fire.
The houses are two storeys tall, with the cross-wing on the left being one storey with an attic. The main range has a dentilled cornice and irregular fenestration, featuring one window on the left and three windows on the right, which are mainly 20th-century casements, predominantly three-light. The gabled porch in the centre of the main range displays exposed close-studding and has a fire insurance mark on the gable. The truss in the porch has two raked struts and a central strut to the collar, with two curved struts in the apex. Notably, the principal ground floor window to the left of the porch is a wide angled oriel from the 20th century.
