Description
No. 102 High Street is a house that was once part of a smithy, likely dating back to the 16th century. It has undergone significant alterations and was refronted in the early 19th century, with additional changes made later. The building features timber framing, with some areas of wattle and daub still visible, and has been altered with painted brick. The roof is made of plain tiles with varying heights, brick dentilled eaves, and a central chimney stack.
The house is two storeys high and has a cellar. The front has three windows, with the first floor featuring 4-pane metal casements. On the ground floor, there is a wide 3/3 sash window set under a brick segmental arch, and a 20th-century multi-pane bay window that replaced a former vehicle entrance. To the left of the bay window is a segmental-arched doorcase topped with a simple moulded hood, leading to an enriched 6-panel door. To the right, there is a segmental-arched carriage entrance with double plank doors and a wrought-iron sign from the smithy above. The building has a painted stone plinth.
The side wall and rear wing display timber framing, with the rear wing featuring mullioned windows that include some leaded quarries and crown glass. Inside, there is a central fireplace with a wooden lintel and an internal chimney breast above. The interior also showcases stop-chamfered spine beams, exposed square-panel timber framing in both side walls, a studded internal division, and some remaining wattle and daub.
