Description
No. 55 Bridge Street is a house that has been converted into four flats. It dates from the late 18th century and has undergone some alterations since then. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features a hipped clay tile roof with brick dogtooth eaves and an external brick stack on the left gable.
The exterior is three storeys high and has a two-window range. On the second floor, there are tripartite windows with 2/2, 8/8, and 2/2 sashes, all with painted lintels and sills. The lower floors feature Venetian windows with painted, rusticated arches. The first-floor windows have 2/2 sashes for the side-lights and a central 8/8 sash with Gothick-traceried heads. The ground floor windows have later plate glazing, but the Gothick-traceried central heads remain. The central entrance has a six-panel door with a fanlight, set within a wooden architrave that includes panelled pilasters on stone plinths and a bracketed cornice. There is also a painted brick plinth.
At the rear, there is a central wing with a hipped roof and brick dentilled eaves. Inside, some original fittings are still present.
