Description
HANBURY CP SCHOOL ROAD (north side) SO 96 SE 4/118 Rectory Gate Cottage - II House. C17 with mid-C19 and late C20 alterations. Timber-framed, painted brick and rendered infill, chamfered sandstone rubble plinth, plain tiled roofs. Hall and cross-wing plan; hall part aligned north/south with cross- wing at north gable end and both of two framed bays; large sandstone external chimneys with brick stacks to rear upper bay of main part and of cross-wing. Single storey and attic with dormers. Framing: three panels from sill to wall-plate; long straight brace in front elevation of lower bay, short straight upper braces in cross-wing; collar and tie-beam trusses with struts throughout. West front elevation: windows are mainly metal casements with plank weatherings; ground floor of main part has a 3-light and a 2-light window and a rectangular light, two gabled dormers with 2-light C20 casements and a blocked doorway in former cross-passage position; there is a C19 brick stack to the right of the roof pitch. Cross-wing gable end has a 3-light ground-floor and 2-light attic window; in angle with main part is a ledged and battened door under a lean-to canopy on shaped brackets. Interior: noted as having two large fireplaces and winder staircase. C20 lean-to extension at south gable end; also large C20 addition at north gable end under construction at time of survey (December 1984). The house was part of the Vernon Estate. It is prominently situated and retains many original features.
