Description

Bell Cottage is a house dating from around 1620, with extensions added in the late 19th century. It features a combination of timber framing with rendered infill on a tall brick plinth, as well as brick construction. The roofs are plain tiled and half-hipped at the east end. The building has an L-plan layout, with the original section consisting of a single-framed bay that runs east to west and includes an external chimney at the west gable end. The late 19th-century extension adds a two-bay north return with a gable end stack and a single-bay addition at the east gable end. The original part has one storey and an attic with a dormer, while the north return has two storeys and features a dentilled eaves cornice.

The framing of the original section includes two panels from the sill to the wall-plate and short straight braces in the upper corners. The west gable end displays a collar and tie-beam truss with one visible strut. On the west front elevation, the ground floor features a 12-pane sash window and a square light, both with cambered heads, while the first floor has an 8-pane sash window. The central entrance is topped by a gabled canopy supported by shaped brackets, with moulded bargeboards and a finial, and it includes a ledged and battened door with a cambered head. The external chimney from the older part is located to the right. Inside, the framing appears to be intact. Bell Cottage was once part of the Vernon Estate and underwent sympathetic alterations in the 19th century.
